The society was established in 1981 and has since grown to become a leading authority in the field, offering training, resources, and a platform for research and discussion.

History[edit | edit source]

The Nautical Archaeology Society was founded in 1981, following the growth and development of interest in maritime archaeology in the UK. The society was initially part of the Council for British Archaeology, but became an independent entity in 1986. Since its inception, the NAS has been instrumental in promoting the study of nautical archaeology and the preservation of maritime heritage.

Activities[edit | edit source]

The NAS offers a range of activities and resources for its members and the wider public. These include training courses in underwater archaeology, conferences and seminars, and the publication of a peer-reviewed journal, the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology. The society also advocates for the protection of underwater cultural heritage and works with other organizations to promote best practice in the field.

Training[edit | edit source]

One of the key activities of the NAS is the provision of training in nautical archaeology. The society offers a range of courses, from introductory sessions for beginners to advanced training for experienced archaeologists. These courses cover a range of topics, including underwater surveying, excavation techniques, and the recording and interpretation of maritime sites.

Advocacy[edit | edit source]

The NAS is a strong advocate for the protection of underwater cultural heritage. The society works with other organizations, including the UNESCO, to promote best practice in the management of underwater sites and to lobby for stronger legislation to protect maritime heritage.

Membership[edit | edit source]

Membership of the Nautical Archaeology Society is open to anyone with an interest in maritime history or underwater archaeology. Members receive a range of benefits, including access to training courses, the society's journal, and opportunities to participate in archaeological projects.
