Newport News is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. It is situated on the southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula, bordering the James River. With a population of approximately 179,388 as of 2020, Newport News is the fifth-most populous city in Virginia.

Newport News was first settled in 1621 by English colonists. It was originally part of Warwick County until it became an independent city in 1896. The city's name is derived from Captain Christopher Newport, who was a prominent figure in the founding of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America.

During the American Civil War, Newport News served as a major supply base for the Union Army. The city's shipbuilding industry also played a crucial role during both World Wars, contributing to the growth and development of the city.
