Noboribetsu, Hokkaido
Noboribetsu is a city located in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. It is part of the Iburi Subprefecture and is renowned for its hot springs (onsen) and natural beauty.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Noboribetsu is situated in the southwestern part of Hokkaido. The city is surrounded by mountains and is home to the Noboribetsu and Karurusu Rivers. The most notable geographical feature of Noboribetsu is Jigokudani (Hell Valley), a volcanic caldera that supplies water to the city's numerous hot springs.
History[edit | edit source]
The area now known as Noboribetsu was originally inhabited by the Ainu people, the indigenous people of Hokkaido. The city's name is derived from the Ainu word "Nupur-pet", which means "dark-colored river". The modern city of Noboribetsu was established in 1959.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Noboribetsu's economy is largely based on tourism, with a focus on its hot springs and natural attractions. The city is also known for its seafood, particularly salmon and crab, which are caught in the nearby waters.

Noboribetsu is home to several cultural events and festivals. The most notable of these is the Noboribetsu Hell Festival, which celebrates the city's hot springs and features a parade of demons known as "Yukijin".

Noboribetsu's main tourist attraction is its hot springs, which are some of the most famous in Japan. The city also features several other attractions, including the Noboribetsu Bear Park, the Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe, and the Noboribetsu Date Historic Village, a theme park that recreates the Edo period.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Noboribetsu is accessible by train via the Muroran Main Line of Hokkaido Railway Company. The city is also served by the New Chitose Airport, which is approximately an hour's drive away.
