Non-rebreather
Non-rebreather mask (also known as a non-rebreather or NRM) is a device used in medicine to assist in the delivery of oxygen therapy. An NRM requires that the patient can breathe unassisted, but unlike low-flow nasal cannulae, the NRM allows for the delivery of higher concentrations of oxygen.
Function[edit | edit source]
The non-rebreather mask covers both the nose and mouth of the patient and attaches with the use of an elastic cord around the patient's head. The NRM is a low-flow system, but because the reservoir bag allows for oxygen to be stored, it is able to provide a higher concentration of oxygen than would be possible from a standard nasal cannula.
Usage[edit | edit source]
Non-rebreather masks are used in a variety of settings, including emergency rooms, hospitals, and at home for patients who require additional oxygen. They are typically used for patients with acute hypoxemia, or low levels of oxygen in the blood.
Risks[edit | edit source]
While non-rebreather masks can be very effective at delivering high concentrations of oxygen, there are some risks associated with their use. These include the risk of carbon dioxide retention, and the risk of the mask causing discomfort or distress to the patient.
