Noon

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Noon is the term used to describe the middle of the day, specifically the moment when the Sun is at its highest point in the sky, which is directly overhead. The term is derived from the Latin word 'nona', which means 'ninth'. This is because in the Roman system of timekeeping, the ninth hour of the day was considered to be midday.

The exact time of noon varies depending on the longitude and latitude of the location, as well as the time of year. In general, noon is considered to be 12:00 PM in the local time zone. However, due to the Earth's tilt and its elliptical orbit around the Sun, the exact moment of solar noon can be slightly earlier or later than 12:00 PM. This discrepancy is known as the equation of time.

In many cultures, noon is associated with a break in the workday, often for a meal. This is known as lunch in many English-speaking countries. In some cultures, a siesta or rest period is also taken at this time.

Noon is also significant in various religious practices. For example, in Islam, the Dhuhr prayer is performed after the sun has surpassed its highest point. In Christianity, the Angelus prayer is traditionally recited at noon.
