Species of millipede

Nopoiulus kochii is a species of millipede in the family Blaniulidae. It is a small, elongated millipede that is widely distributed across Europe and has been introduced to other regions. This species is notable for its adaptability to various habitats and its role in soil ecology.

Description[edit | edit source]

Nopoiulus kochii is characterized by its slender, cylindrical body, which is typically pale brown to white in color. Adults can reach lengths of up to 12 mm and have around 30 body segments. The body segments are covered with fine hairs, giving the millipede a slightly fuzzy appearance. The head is small with simple eyes and short antennae.

Distribution and Habitat[edit | edit source]

Nopoiulus kochii is native to Europe but has been introduced to North America and other regions. It is commonly found in leaf litter, under stones, and in soil, where it plays a role in the decomposition of organic matter. This species is adaptable to a variety of environments, including urban areas, forests, and grasslands.

Reproduction and Development[edit | edit source]

The reproductive system of Nopoiulus kochii is typical of the order Julida, with males possessing modified legs called gonopods used for transferring sperm to females. The development of these gonopods is a key feature in the identification of the species. Females lay eggs in the soil, and the young millipedes undergo several molts before reaching maturity.

Ecological Role[edit | edit source]

As a detritivore, Nopoiulus kochii contributes to the breakdown of organic material, aiding in nutrient cycling within ecosystems. By feeding on decaying plant matter, this millipede helps maintain soil health and fertility.
