The screenplay, written by Erlend Loe, tells the story of a former professional skier, Jomar Henriksen, who has isolated himself and works as a ski lift operator. The film explores themes of loneliness, redemption, and the search for personal identity against the backdrop of the stunning Norwegian landscape.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The protagonist, Jomar Henriksen, is a deeply troubled man who has withdrawn from the world following a nervous breakdown. Living a solitary existence in the mountains, his mundane life is upended when he discovers he may have a son in the far north of Norway. Driven by a newfound purpose, Jomar sets out on a snowmobile, with a small supply of alcohol to sustain him, on a quixotic journey through Norway's vast and unforgiving winter landscape. Along the way, he encounters a series of characters that challenge his outlook on life and aid him in his quest for redemption and connection.

Production[edit | edit source]

North was filmed in various locations across Norway, showcasing the country's breathtaking natural beauty. The film's director, Rune Denstad Langlo, and screenwriter, Erlend Loe, collaborated closely to create a narrative that combines elements of drama and dark comedy. The harsh and icy Norwegian landscape plays a crucial role in the film, reflecting Jomar's internal struggle and serving as a character in its own right.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Upon its release, North received critical acclaim for its unique blend of humor and melancholy, as well as its stunning cinematography and Anders Baasmo Christiansen's compelling performance as Jomar. The film won several awards, including the Best New Narrative Filmmaker award for Rune Denstad Langlo at the Tribeca Film Festival. Critics praised the film for its poignant exploration of human vulnerability and resilience, and its ability to find beauty and humor in the bleakness of the protagonist's circumstances.

Themes[edit | edit source]

North delves into themes of isolation, self-discovery, and the human need for connection. Jomar's journey is as much an internal one as it is a physical trek across the snowy expanse of Norway. The film examines the ways in which individuals cope with trauma and loneliness, and the transformative power of human interaction and the natural world.
