North Carolina Republican Party
Political party in North Carolina
The North Carolina Republican Party (NCGOP) is the state affiliate of the Republican Party in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The party is headquartered in Raleigh.
History[edit | edit source]
The North Carolina Republican Party was established in 1867 during the Reconstruction era following the American Civil War. The party initially gained support from African Americans and Unionists. The first Republican governor of North Carolina was William Woods Holden, who served from 1868 to 1871.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the party struggled to gain a foothold in the state, which was dominated by the Democratic Party. However, the party began to gain traction in the latter half of the 20th century, particularly with the rise of the conservative movement and the Southern strategy.
Organization[edit | edit source]
The North Carolina Republican Party is organized at the state, district, and county levels. The state party is governed by the State Executive Committee, which is composed of elected officers and representatives from each of the state's congressional districts. The party holds an annual convention to elect officers and set policy priorities.
