Nose Job

A nose job, medically known as a Rhinoplasty, is a type of plastic surgery that is performed to change the shape or improve the function of the nose. The procedure can be done for medical reasons, such as to correct breathing problems related to the nose or correct disfigurement resulting from trauma or birth defects. It can also be done for cosmetic reasons, which will change the nose's shape and appearance.

History

The first recorded nose job was performed in ancient India by the surgeon Sushruta in 600 B.C. This procedure, known as the "Indian method," was done to reconstruct noses that were amputated as a form of punishment for certain crimes. The technique was later brought to the western world where it was improved upon throughout the centuries.

Procedure

A nose job is usually performed by a surgeon who specializes in plastic surgery. The procedure involves making incisions to access the bones and cartilage that support the nose. The incisions are usually made inside the nose so that they are invisible after the surgery. Depending on the desired result, some bone and cartilage may be removed, or tissue may be added. After the surgeon has rearranged and reshaped the bone and cartilage, the skin and tissue are redraped over the structure of the nose. A splint is placed outside the nose to support the new shape of the nose as it heals.

Risks and Complications

Like any major surgery, a nose job carries risks such as bleeding, infection, and an adverse reaction to anesthesia. Other possible risks specific to rhinoplasty include recurrent nosebleeds, difficulty breathing through the nose, numbness in the nose, an uneven-looking nose, scarring, a hole in the septum (septal perforation), and a need for additional surgery.

Recovery

Recovery time for a nose job varies depending on the individual and the complexity of the surgery. Generally, initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, and the new shape of the nose will start to become apparent. It may take up to a year for the final shape to be fully refined.
