Orciprenaline

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

(Redirected from Novasmasol)

Orciprenaline (also known as metaproterenol) is a medication primarily used in the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor agonist that stimulates the beta receptors of the smooth muscles in the lungs, uterus, and vascular supply to the skeletal muscles, leading to bronchodilation.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The term "Orciprenaline" is derived from the chemical name O-r-cyclopropyl-n-ethyl-n-allyl-l-ine, which describes its chemical structure. The alternative name, "metaproterenol", is a combination of meta (indicating a change) and proterenol (a related drug).

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Orciprenaline works by stimulating the beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the lungs, which leads to relaxation of the smooth muscles and bronchodilation. This helps to alleviate symptoms of asthma and COPD such as shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Orciprenaline include tachycardia (rapid heart rate), palpitations, tremor, and anxiety. Less common side effects may include hypotension (low blood pressure), dizziness, headache, nausea, and vomiting.
