From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Nsambya Home Care (NHC) is a department of Nsambya Hospital in Uganda that provides medical and psychosocial support to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs). Established in 1987, NHC has served over 15,000 clients. With support from the AIDS Relief program and Catholic Relief Services, NHC started providing antiretroviral medications in 2004, benefiting close to 2000 active patients. NHC is led by Maria Nannyonga Musoke, a consultant paediatrician of Nsambya Hospital.

History[edit | edit source]

NHC was founded in 1987 by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary in response to the AIDS epidemic. Over the years, the department expanded its services to meet the growing demand. Various interventions were implemented, including outreach clinics, behavior change programs, pediatric counseling, income-generating activities, and AIDS sensitization programs. NHC also involved client volunteers in the program and provided pastoral care services.

Activities[edit | edit source]

NHC offers a range of services, including HIV testing and CD4 count, antiretroviral drugs, treatment of opportunistic infections, outreach programs to patients and communities, aftercare services, behavioral change programs, and training for volunteers and counselors. The department also focuses on controlling stigmatization associated with HIV/AIDS.
