Nut (hardware)
Nut (hardware) is a type of fastener with a threaded hole. Nuts are almost always used in conjunction with a bolting to fasten multiple parts together. The two partners are kept together by a combination of their threads' friction, a slight stretching of the bolt, and compression of the parts to be held together.
Types[edit | edit source]
There are many types of nuts, each designed for specific applications and all with unique attributes. Some common types include:
- Hex Nut: The most common type, characterized by its hexagonal shape.
- Locknut: Designed to resist loosening under vibrations and torque.
- Wing Nut: Has two large metal "wings" for hand tightening and loosening.
- Nyloc Nut: A type of locknut with a nylon insert that resists loosening.
- Square Nut: A four-sided nut that provides a greater surface area in contact with the part being fastened, reducing the chance of loosening.
Materials[edit | edit source]
Nuts can be made from a variety of materials depending on their intended use. Common materials include Steel, Stainless steel, Brass, Bronze, and Plastic. The choice of material affects the nut's strength, corrosion resistance, and cost.
Applications[edit | edit source]
Nuts are used in a wide range of applications from simple household DIY projects to complex engineering and construction projects. They are fundamental components in machinery, vehicles, structural applications, and furniture assembly.
Installation[edit | edit source]
To install a nut, it is threaded onto a bolt and tightened, usually with a wrench or socket. The tightening process clamps the parts together, providing the necessary preload to keep the joint secure under load. For critical applications, specific torque values must be applied, often using a Torque wrench.
Standards[edit | edit source]
There are several standards governing the manufacture and use of nuts, including ISO, DIN, and ANSI. These standards ensure compatibility and reliability across different types of nuts and bolts.
