OHRP

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

OHRP or Office for Human Research Protections is a part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that is dedicated to protecting the rights, welfare, and wellbeing of participants involved in research conducted or supported by the HHS. The OHRP provides leadership in the protection of the rights, welfare, and wellbeing of subjects involved in research conducted or supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). OHRP helps ensure this by providing clarification and guidance, developing educational programs and materials, maintaining regulatory oversight, and providing advice on ethical and regulatory issues in biomedical and behavioral research.

History[edit | edit source]

The OHRP was established on June 18, 2000, replacing the Office for Protection from Research Risks (OPRR) within the National Institutes of Health. The decision to create a separate office was made to reflect the importance of its mission and to give the office the stature and independence necessary to effectively implement its responsibilities.

Responsibilities[edit | edit source]

The OHRP is responsible for the oversight and implementation of the HHS regulations for the protection of human subjects, which are codified at 45 CFR part 46. These regulations are applicable to all research involving human subjects conducted, supported, or otherwise subject to regulation by any federal department or agency.
