Oedemeridae, commonly known as false blister beetles, are a family of beetles within the order Coleoptera. This family is characterized by their soft bodies and often bright metallic colors. Oedemeridae are found worldwide, with a significant number of species inhabiting tropical and subtropical regions.
Description[edit | edit source]
Oedemeridae are typically slender and elongate beetles, ranging in size from 5 to 20 mm. They are often brightly colored, with metallic hues of green, blue, or bronze. The elytra (wing covers) are soft and flexible, unlike the hard elytra of many other beetles. The antennae are usually filiform and can be as long as the body.
Biology[edit | edit source]
Oedemeridae larvae are wood-borers, feeding on decaying wood and plant material. They play an important role in the decomposition process and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. Adult beetles are often found on flowers, where they feed on pollen and nectar. Some species are known to be pollinators.
Habitat[edit | edit source]
These beetles are commonly found in habitats such as forests, meadows, and gardens. They are often associated with decaying wood, where the larvae develop. Adults are frequently seen on flowers, particularly in spring and summer.
Reproduction[edit | edit source]
The life cycle of Oedemeridae includes egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in crevices of decaying wood. The larvae hatch and bore into the wood, where they feed and develop. After pupation, adults emerge and are often seen on flowers.
Significance[edit | edit source]
While Oedemeridae are not considered major pests, some species can cause damage to wooden structures due to their larval wood-boring habits. However, they are generally beneficial insects, contributing to the decomposition of dead wood and pollination of plants.
