Ohio (state)

Ohio is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern region of the country. It is the 34th largest by area, the 7th most populous, and the 10th most densely populated of the 50 United States. The state's capital and largest city is Columbus.

The area of Ohio has been inhabited for thousands of years by various cultures of indigenous peoples. In the 18th century, European traders flocked to Ohio, bringing diseases that had a devastating effect on the native populations. Ohio was admitted to the Union as the 17th state on March 1, 1803.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Ohio is bounded by the Ohio River to the south, the Great Lakes to the north, Pennsylvania to the east, and Indiana to the west. It has a diverse landscape ranging from flat farmland to steep elevations at the Appalachian Mountains.

Ohio's economy is one of the largest in the U.S., ranking 7th in GDP as of 2019. It is diverse and includes sectors such as manufacturing, financial services, healthcare, and retail.

Ohio is known for its cultural contributions, including being the birthplace of seven U.S. Presidents, the invention of the hot dog, and the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings.

Ohio has a strong education system with many high-ranking public and private institutions. The Ohio State University is one of the largest universities in the U.S.
