Olive Garden was established by General Mills, Inc. in 1982. The first restaurant was opened in Orlando, Florida. The chain quickly expanded, and by 1989, there were 145 Olive Garden restaurants. In 1995, General Mills spun off its restaurant holdings into a new company, Darden Restaurants, which became the parent company of Olive Garden.
