Olmesartan/amlodipine

Olmesartan/amlodipine is a combination medication used in the treatment of high blood pressure. It contains two active ingredients: olmesartan, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, and amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker. These two drugs work together to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke or heart attack.

Mechanism of Action

Olmesartan works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes blood vessels to constrict and promotes the release of another hormone called aldosterone, which increases the amount of sodium and water in the body. By blocking the effects of angiotensin II, olmesartan helps to relax and widen the blood vessels, reducing blood pressure.

Amlodipine works by blocking the transport of calcium into the smooth muscle cells lining the arteries of the heart and body, causing them to relax and dilate, thereby reducing blood pressure.

Side Effects

Common side effects of olmesartan/amlodipine include dizziness, lightheadedness, swelling ankles/feet, or flushing. Serious side effects may include fainting, symptoms of a high potassium blood level (such as muscle weakness, slow/irregular heartbeat), unusual change in the amount of urine.

Precautions

Before taking olmesartan/amlodipine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to either of the drugs; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
