Ondenc

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Ondenc is a white grape variety that is primarily grown in the Gaillac and Côtes de Duras wine regions of South West France. It is known for its high acidity and is often used in the production of sweet dessert wines.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Ondenc are not well documented, but it is believed to have been grown in the Gaillac region for centuries. The grape was nearly wiped out by the phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century, but has since been revived and is now a key component in many Gaillac wines.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Ondenc is a late-ripening grape that requires a long growing season to fully develop its flavors. It is resistant to many common vine diseases, but is susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis cinerea, a fungus that can cause noble rot.

Wine Styles[edit | edit source]

Ondenc is typically used to produce sweet dessert wines with high acidity and flavors of honey, apricot, and citrus. It can also be used to make dry white wines, although this is less common. In Gaillac, it is often blended with other local grape varieties such as Mauzac and Len de l'El.

Synonyms[edit | edit source]

Ondenc is also known under several other names, including Blanquette, Blanquette du Midi, and Blanquette de Limoux.
