Orgasmic platform

Orgasmic platform is a term in human sexuality that describes the noticeable thickening of the outer third of the vagina during the plateau phase of the sexual response cycle, which precedes orgasm. This physiological response is observed in sexually mature females of certain mammal species, most notably humans.

Physiology[edit | edit source]

The orgasmic platform is created by the engorgement of the corpus cavernosum of the clitoris and the lower part of the vagina due to increased blood flow during sexual arousal. This engorgement leads to the outer third of the vagina thickening and becoming firm, forming the so-called "platform". The purpose of this physiological change is to prepare the vagina for the receipt of the penis during sexual intercourse.

Sexual response cycle[edit | edit source]

The formation of the orgasmic platform is part of the plateau phase of the sexual response cycle, as defined by Masters and Johnson in their seminal work on human sexual response. This phase is characterized by a high level of sexual arousal, and is immediately followed by the orgasm phase.

Role in orgasm[edit | edit source]

The orgasmic platform plays a crucial role in female orgasm. During orgasm, the muscles of the orgasmic platform contract rhythmically, contributing to the pleasurable sensations experienced. The contractions also facilitate the transport of sperm from the vagina to the uterus, thus playing a role in reproduction.
