Oriental medicine

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Oriental medicine is a term used to describe the various traditional medical practices of East Asia. These include Traditional Chinese medicine, Korean medicine, and Japanese Kampo medicine. The term is sometimes used synonymously with alternative medicine, but this is not strictly accurate as many of the practices it refers to have a long history and are part of mainstream healthcare in their countries of origin.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of Oriental medicine is long and complex, with each country developing its own unique practices and theories. In China, the earliest records of medical theory date back to the Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon, written around 200 BCE. This text laid the foundation for the theory of Yin and yang and the Five Phases, which are still fundamental to Traditional Chinese Medicine today.

In Korea, the Dongui Bogam, written in the 17th century, is considered one of the most important texts in Korean medicine. It combines Chinese theories with unique Korean insights and is still widely used in Korea today.

Japanese Kampo medicine has its roots in Chinese medicine but has developed its own unique practices and theories. The Shanghan Lun, a Chinese text from the 3rd century, is considered the foundational text of Kampo medicine.

Practices[edit | edit source]

Oriental medicine encompasses a wide range of practices. These include herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping therapy, and Tui na massage. Many of these practices are based on the theory of Qi, a vital energy that flows through the body.

Criticism and Controversy[edit | edit source]

Oriental medicine has been criticized for its lack of scientific evidence and potential for harmful side effects. Critics argue that many of the theories it is based on, such as the concept of Qi, are not supported by scientific evidence. However, proponents argue that these practices have been used successfully for thousands of years and that they offer a holistic approach to health that is often lacking in Western medicine.
