Oscar Wilder Underwood (May 6, 1862 – January 25, 1929) was an influential American politician who served as a United States Senator from Alabama and as a member of the United States House of Representatives for Alabama's 9th district. A prominent member of the Democratic Party, Underwood is notable for his roles in legislative reform and his opposition to the Ku Klux Klan during the 1920s.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Oscar Underwood was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and later moved to Alabama, where he pursued his education at the University of Virginia, studying law. After completing his education, he practiced law before entering politics.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Underwood's political career began when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1895. During his tenure, he became a leading advocate for tariff reform and was instrumental in the passage of the Underwood Tariff Act of 1913, which significantly lowered tariffs for the first time since the Civil War and implemented an income tax following the ratification of the Sixteenth Amendment.
In 1915, Underwood was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he continued to work on issues related to trade and taxation. He also took a strong stand against the Ku Klux Klan, opposing their influence in national politics. His stance against the Klan was particularly significant during the 1924 Democratic National Convention, where he helped prevent the Klan's agenda from dominating the platform.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Oscar Underwood's contributions to American politics, particularly in the areas of tax reform and civil rights, are well-regarded. His efforts to curb the power of the Ku Klux Klan and his work on economic policies have left a lasting impact on the political landscape of the United States.
Death and Honors[edit | edit source]
