Ottawa County, Kansas[edit | edit source]

Ottawa County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the county population was 5,975. The largest city and county seat is Minneapolis. The county was named after the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma and was established on August 30, 1866.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Ottawa County encompasses a total area of 721 square miles, of which 721 square miles is land and 0.4 square miles is water. The Solomon River runs through the northern part of the county and the Saline River through the southern part.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2020 census, there were 5,975 people, 2,338 households, and 1,647 families residing in the county. The population density was 8.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 96.7% White, 0.6% Black or African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.8% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.4% of the population.

Healthcare services in Ottawa County are primarily provided by the Ottawa County Health Center (OCHC), a critical access hospital located in Minneapolis, Kansas.

Ottawa County Health Center[edit | edit source]

Ottawa County Health Center (OCHC) is a 25-bed critical access hospital that provides a wide range of healthcare services to Ottawa County and surrounding areas. Services offered include emergency care, inpatient care, outpatient services, surgical services, and a variety of specialty clinics.

OCHC also operates a rural health clinic, the Minneapolis Health Clinic, which provides primary care services to the community. The clinic offers family medicine, preventive care, women's health services, and chronic disease management.

In addition to the hospital and clinic, OCHC operates the Ottawa County Home Health Agency, which provides home health services to residents of Ottawa County. Services include skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.

Education in Ottawa County is provided by USD 239 North Ottawa County and USD 240 Twin Valley schools. The county is also home to the Minneapolis Public Library.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Ottawa County is served by U.S. Route 81 and Kansas highways 18 and 106. The county also has one public airport, the Minneapolis City County Airport.
