The Outer Plexiform Layer (OPL) is one of the layers in the retina of the eye. It is located between the Inner Nuclear Layer and the Outer Nuclear Layer.
Structure[edit | edit source]
The Outer Plexiform Layer is composed of the connections, or synapses, between the dendrites of horizontal cells, bipolar cells, and the axons of photoreceptor cells.
Function[edit | edit source]
The OPL plays a crucial role in the visual signal processing pathway of the eye. It is where the first level of visual information processing occurs.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Damage to the Outer Plexiform Layer can result in vision loss or impairment.
