Outline of Sustainability

Sustainability is a broad discipline that seeks to understand and implement ways to maintain ecological and environmental health, economic viability, and social equity indefinitely. It encompasses a wide range of topics, including but not limited to, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, water conservation, and green building practices. The goal of sustainability is to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This article provides an outline of the key concepts, practices, and areas of study related to sustainability.

Definitions and Concepts[edit | edit source]

  • Sustainability - The practice of maintaining processes of productivity indefinitely by replacing resources used with resources of equal or greater value without degrading or endangering natural biotic systems.
  • Sustainable Development - Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
  • Ecological Footprint - A measure of human demand on the Earth's ecosystems. It compares human demand with planet Earth's ecological capacity to regenerate.
  • Carrying Capacity - The maximum population size of the species that the environment can sustain indefinitely, given the food, habitat, water, and other necessities available in the environment.
