PGE1
PGE1 or Prostaglandin E1 is a prostaglandin which has various effects including vasodilation and inhibition of platelet aggregation. PGE1 is used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction and has been used to induce labor.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
PGE1 is a type of fatty acid that is produced in the body and can be synthesized in the laboratory. It is a member of the prostaglandin family of compounds, which are derived from arachidonic acid and have a wide range of biological activities.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
PGE1 acts by binding to prostaglandin receptors on cells, leading to a variety of effects. It is a potent vasodilator, meaning it widens blood vessels, and it also inhibits platelet aggregation, which is the clumping together of platelets in the blood.
Medical uses[edit | edit source]
PGE1 is used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It is administered as an injection directly into the penis, where it acts to increase blood flow and cause an erection. PGE1 is also used to induce labor in pregnant women, as it can stimulate contractions of the uterus.
Side effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of PGE1 include pain at the injection site, headache, and flushing. In rare cases, it can cause priapism, a prolonged and painful erection.
