Padma Lakshmi is an Indian-American actress, model, author, and television host. She was born on September 1, 1970, in Chennai, India, and grew up in the United States. Lakshmi began her career as a model and later transitioned into acting, with appearances in films such as Glitter, The Mistress of Spices, and Star Trek: Enterprise.

Padma Lakshmi was born on September 1, 1970, in Chennai, India. Her mother, Vijaya Lakshmi, was a nurse, and her father, V. K. Lakshmi, was an executive with Pfizer. Lakshmi grew up in Chennai and moved to the United States when she was 4 years old. She spent her childhood living in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Lakshmi attended Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, where she earned a degree in theater arts. After college, she worked as a model, and later pursued a career in acting.

Lakshmi began her career as a model in the 1990s. She appeared in advertisements for major brands such as Versus and Roberto Cavalli, and was a favorite of prominent photographers such as Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts.
