Palau
(Redirected from Palauan cuisine)
Palau (officially known as the Republic of Palau), is an island country located in the western Pacific Ocean. It is part of the Micronesia region, comprising approximately 340 islands. The country's population of around 21,000 is spread across 250 square miles. The most populous island is Koror, but the capital, Ngerulmud, is located on the nearby island of Babeldaob, in Melekeok State. Palau shares maritime boundaries with Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Federated States of Micronesia.
History[edit | edit source]
The islands of Palau were first inhabited around 3,000 years ago, likely by migrants from what is now Indonesia. The Palauan society had a highly complex matrilineal clan system. European contact began in the 16th century, with the Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos sighting the islands in 1543. Palau was made part of the Spanish East Indies in 1574. Following Spain's defeat in the Spanish–American War in 1898, the islands were sold to Imperial Germany in 1899. During World War I, the islands were conquered by Japan, and during World War II, they were a major battleground in the Pacific War.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Palau's islands, most of which are uninhabited, are renowned for their unique geological features. The Rock Islands and Babeldaob are the most notable. The islands are of volcanic and coral origin and have a combined coastline of 1,519 kilometers. The highest point in Palau is Mount Ngerchelchuus, at 242 meters.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Palau's economy is based mainly on tourism, subsistence agriculture, and fishing. The government is the largest employer, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US.
Culture[edit | edit source]
The culture of Palau is a blend of Micronesian, Melanesian, Asian, and Western elements. The traditional government system still exists alongside the modern government.
