The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is an independent republic associated with the United States. It consists of four states – from west to east, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae – that are spread across the Western Pacific Ocean. Together, the states comprise around 607 islands (a combined land area of approximately 702 km²) that cover a longitudinal distance of almost 2,700 km just north of the equator.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of the Federated States of Micronesia is deeply rooted in the ancient cultures of the Micronesian people. The islands were first settled over 4,000 years ago by Austronesian-speaking peoples. European explorers arrived in the 16th century, and the islands were later colonized by Spain, Germany, and Japan. After World War II, the islands became part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands under United Nations administration, managed by the United States. The FSM achieved independence in 1986 under a Compact of Free Association with the United States.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The Federated States of Micronesia is located in the Caroline Islands of the western Pacific Ocean. The country consists of four states, each centered on one or more main high islands, and all but Kosrae include numerous outlying atolls. The islands are known for their diverse ecosystems, including coral reefs, mangroves, and tropical rainforests.
Government and Politics[edit | edit source]
The FSM is a federal republic with a unicameral legislature. The President is both the head of state and the head of government. The Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia is composed of 14 members, with four senators elected from each state to serve four-year terms, and ten senators elected based on population to serve two-year terms.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of the Federated States of Micronesia is heavily dependent on financial assistance from the United States. The primary economic activities include subsistence farming and fishing. Tourism is also a growing sector, with visitors attracted to the islands' natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
The population of the FSM is predominantly Micronesian, with a small percentage of other ethnic groups. English is the official language, but several indigenous languages are also spoken, including Yapese, Chuukese, Pohnpeian, and Kosraean.
Culture[edit | edit source]
The culture of the Federated States of Micronesia is rich and diverse, with each state having its own unique traditions and customs. Traditional music, dance, and art are important aspects of Micronesian culture. The islands are also known for their navigational skills and the construction of outrigger canoes.
