Pallagrello bianco

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Pallagrello bianco is a white Italian wine grape variety that is grown in the Campania region of southern Italy. The grape has a long history in the region and was once a favorite of the Bourbon kings who ruled the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies during the 18th century. However, the variety fell out of favor in the 20th century and was nearly extinct until a revival of interest in the 1990s.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of the Pallagrello bianco grape are not clear, but it is believed to have been grown in the Campania region for centuries. The grape was highly prized by the Bourbon kings who ruled the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in the 18th century. However, in the 20th century, the variety fell out of favor due to its low yields and was nearly extinct by the 1980s.

In the 1990s, a revival of interest in traditional grape varieties led to a resurgence in the planting of Pallagrello bianco. Today, the grape is used to produce a variety of wines, including single varietal wines and blends.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Pallagrello bianco is a late-ripening grape that requires a long growing season to fully develop its flavors. The grape is known for its high acidity and potential to produce wines with a strong mineral character. It is typically grown in the volcanic soils of the Campania region, which contribute to the grape's distinctive flavor profile.

Wine styles[edit | edit source]

Wines made from Pallagrello bianco are typically medium-bodied with high acidity. They often have flavors of citrus and white peach, with a distinctive mineral undertone. These wines are often aged in oak, which can add additional complexity and richness.

Food pairing[edit | edit source]

Due to its high acidity and strong mineral character, Pallagrello bianco wines pair well with a variety of foods. They are particularly well-suited to seafood dishes, such as grilled fish or shellfish. They can also be paired with poultry, pasta dishes, and a variety of cheeses.
