Its headquarters are in Sunset Hills, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. The company operates as Saint Louis Bread Company in the Greater St. Louis area, where it has over 100 locations. Offerings include bakery items, pasta, salads, sandwiches, soups, and specialty drinks.

Panera Bread was founded by Ken Rosenthal, Ronald M. Shaich, and Louis Kane in 1987. The company was originally a part of Au Bon Pain Co. Inc., which was then sold in 1999 so that the company could focus on the Panera Bread brand.
