Papeži
== Papeži ==
Papeži (plural of Pope) is the title given to the Bishop of Rome, who is the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church. The Pope is considered the spiritual successor to Saint Peter, one of the Apostles of Jesus Christ and the first Bishop of Rome. The office of the Pope is known as the Papacy, and the Pope's ecclesiastical jurisdiction is called the Holy See.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of the Papacy dates back to the early days of Christianity. According to Catholic tradition, Saint Peter was appointed by Jesus as the head of his disciples, and he later became the first Bishop of Rome. Over the centuries, the role of the Pope has evolved, with the Pope becoming a central figure in the Catholic Church and a significant political and cultural leader in Europe.
Election[edit | edit source]
The Pope is elected by the College of Cardinals in a process called a Papal Conclave. The Conclave is held in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City. Cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote. The election process continues until a candidate receives a two-thirds majority vote. Once elected, the new Pope chooses a papal name and is introduced to the public with the announcement "Habemus Papam" ("We have a Pope").
Role and Responsibilities[edit | edit source]
The Pope's primary role is to serve as the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church. This includes overseeing the administration of the Church, defining doctrines, and representing the Church in diplomatic matters. The Pope also appoints bishops, convenes synods, and issues encyclicals and apostolic letters.
Residence[edit | edit source]
The official residence of the Pope is the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. The Vatican is an independent city-state enclaved within Rome, Italy. The Pope also has a summer residence at Castel Gandolfo.
