Parapoxvirus

Parapoxvirus is a genus of viruses in the family Poxviridae, subfamily Chordopoxvirinae. Parapoxviruses are zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted from animals to humans. They are known to cause diseases in both animals and humans, with symptoms ranging from skin lesions to more severe systemic infections. The most notable diseases caused by Parapoxvirus include Orf (also known as contagious ecthyma, contagious pustular dermatitis, or scabby mouth), bovine papular stomatitis, and pseudocowpox.

Structure and Genome[edit | edit source]

Parapoxviruses are characterized by their unique ovoid or cylindrical shape, which distinguishes them from other members of the Poxviridae family, which are generally brick-shaped. The virus particles (virions) are enveloped and contain a linear double-stranded DNA genome. The genome encodes for several proteins that are involved in virus replication, host immune response evasion, and virulence.

Transmission of Parapoxvirus can occur through direct contact with infected animals, contaminated fomites, or through breaks in the skin. Humans can contract the virus by handling infected animals, making it a significant concern for farmers, veterinarians, and others who work closely with livestock.

In animals, Parapoxvirus infections can lead to significant economic losses due to decreased productivity and the need for veterinary care. In humans, the infection typically results in localized skin lesions that are self-limiting but can be painful and may require supportive treatment.

Management of the condition involves supportive care, such as the application of topical antiseptics to prevent secondary bacterial infections and pain management. In severe cases, especially in immunocompromised individuals, antiviral drugs may be considered.

Preventive measures against Parapoxvirus infections include wearing protective clothing and gloves when handling animals, practicing good hand hygiene, and promptly disinfecting contaminated surfaces. Vaccines are available for some animal species to prevent the spread of the virus within livestock populations.

Parapoxvirus infections are globally distributed, with cases reported in various countries. The incidence of human infections is relatively low but may be underreported due to the self-limiting nature of the disease.
