Paratracheal lymph node
Paratracheal lymph nodes are a group of lymph nodes located in the neck, adjacent to the trachea. They are part of the body's lymphatic system, which plays a crucial role in the immune response and the circulation of lymph.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
Paratracheal lymph nodes are situated on either side of the trachea, in the mediastinum. They are divided into right and left groups. The right paratracheal nodes drain the trachea and the esophagus, while the left paratracheal nodes are involved in the drainage of the thoracic part of the trachea and the lower part of the larynx.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the paratracheal lymph nodes is to filter lymph - a clear, watery fluid that carries white blood cells, especially lymphocytes, throughout the body. These nodes also play a vital role in the body's immune response, as they are responsible for detecting and responding to foreign substances that enter the body.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Enlargement of the paratracheal lymph nodes, known as lymphadenopathy, can be a sign of various medical conditions, including infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancers such as lung cancer and lymphoma. In particular, paratracheal lymph node enlargement is often seen in lung cancer, as these nodes are one of the first sites of metastasis.
Biopsy of the paratracheal lymph nodes can be performed to diagnose these conditions. This is typically done using a procedure called mediastinoscopy, which involves inserting a small camera through a small incision in the neck to visualize and sample the nodes.
