Park Dietz

Park Elliot Dietz (born August 13, 1948) is an American forensic psychiatrist who has consulted or testified in many of the highest profile US criminal cases including Jeffrey Dahmer, The Unabomber, The Beltway Sniper, and Jared Lee Loughner. He is the founder of the Threat Assessment Group of Newport Beach, California.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Dietz was born in West Reading, Pennsylvania. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University in 1970, his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1975, and his M.P.H. from Johns Hopkins University in 1977. He completed his residency in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1978.

Career[edit | edit source]

Dietz is a clinical professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is also a lecturer in law at Harvard Law School and a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Cornell University Medical College.

In 1982, Dietz founded the Threat Assessment Group, a private forensic consulting firm that provides assistance to law enforcement and other agencies in the assessment and management of violent risk.

Dietz has testified in a number of high-profile criminal cases. He was the prosecution's mental health expert in the trials of Jeffrey Dahmer, Andrea Yates, The Unabomber, and Jared Lee Loughner. He also consulted on the Beltway sniper attacks case.

Dietz has published numerous articles in the fields of forensic psychiatry, threat assessment, and violence risk assessment. His work has been cited in hundreds of scholarly articles and legal cases.
