Subcallosal Area
The Subcallosal Area is a region of the brain located beneath the corpus callosum, the thick band of nerve fibers that connects the left and right hemispheres of the brain. It is part of the limbic system, a group of structures involved in emotion, long-term memory, and behavior.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
The term "subcallosal" is derived from the Latin words "sub" meaning "under" and "callosum" referring to the corpus callosum. Thus, the term literally means "under the corpus callosum".
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The subcallosal area is located in the anterior cingulate cortex, which is involved in decision making, emotion, and anticipation of reward. It is bordered by the cingulate gyrus to the north, the septum pellucidum to the south, and the nucleus accumbens to the east.
Function[edit | edit source]
The subcallosal area is involved in the regulation of emotion and behavior. It is also thought to play a role in the pathophysiology of depression and anxiety disorders. Some studies suggest that deep brain stimulation of the subcallosal area can be effective in treating severe, treatment-resistant depression.
