Paternal refers to the genetic or characteristic traits that are inherited from a father. It is the male equivalent of Maternal, which refers to traits inherited from a mother. The term is used in various contexts, including Genetics, Psychology, and Sociology.

In the field of Genetics, paternal refers to the genes or traits that are inherited from a father. This includes physical characteristics such as eye color, hair color, and height, as well as genetic disorders or diseases that can be passed down from father to child. The study of these inherited traits is known as Genetic inheritance.

Psychology[edit | edit source]

In Psychology, the term paternal is used to describe the influence of a father on a child's development. This can include the father's role in the child's emotional, social, and cognitive development. The study of these influences is known as Parental influence.

Sociology[edit | edit source]

In Sociology, paternal refers to the societal roles and expectations of fathers. This can include the father's role in the family, the workplace, and the community. The study of these roles and expectations is known as Gender roles.
