Patty and Selma Bouvier are fictional characters in the animated television series The Simpsons. They are Marge Simpson's older twin sisters, who work at the Springfield Department of Motor Vehicles. Both characters are voiced by Julie Kavner.

Character Overview[edit | edit source]

Patty and Selma are known for their distinctive raspy voices, chain-smoking habits, and cynical attitudes. They are often portrayed as being highly critical of their brother-in-law, Homer Simpson, whom they despise. Despite their abrasive personalities, they share a close bond with their sister Marge and show occasional moments of kindness.

Patty Bouvier[edit | edit source]

Patty Bouvier is the younger of the two twins. She is characterized by her short, curly hair and her preference for wearing a blue dress. Patty is openly lesbian, a fact that was revealed in the episode "There's Something About Marrying". She is more cynical and bitter than Selma and has a strong aversion to men.

Selma Bouvier[edit | edit source]

Selma Bouvier is the older twin, distinguishable by her long, straight hair and her preference for wearing a pink dress. Selma has been married multiple times, with her most notable marriage being to Sideshow Bob. She has an adopted daughter named Ling Bouvier. Unlike Patty, Selma is more open to the idea of finding love, although her relationships often end in failure.

Employment[edit | edit source]

Both Patty and Selma work at the DMV, where they are known for their lack of enthusiasm and poor customer service. Their jobs at the DMV are a recurring source of humor in the series, often highlighting the inefficiencies and frustrations of bureaucratic systems.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

With Marge Simpson[edit | edit source]

Patty and Selma share a close relationship with their sister Marge, although they often express concern over her marriage to Homer. They frequently attempt to convince Marge to leave Homer, believing she deserves better.

With Homer Simpson[edit | edit source]

Patty and Selma's relationship with Homer is antagonistic. They frequently mock and belittle him, and their interactions are often filled with insults and sarcasm. Despite this, there are rare moments when they show a begrudging respect for Homer, particularly when he helps them out of difficult situations.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Patty and Selma have appeared in numerous episodes of The Simpsons since the show's inception. Some notable episodes featuring the characters include "Principal Charming", "Selma's Choice", and "Patty and Selma".
