Paul Grattan Kirk Jr. (born January 18, 1938) is an American lawyer and politician who served as a United States Senator from Massachusetts. Kirk, a member of the Democratic Party, was appointed to the Senate after the death of Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Paul G. Kirk was born in Newton, Massachusetts, and attended Harvard University, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He later graduated from Harvard Law School. After completing his education, Kirk became involved in legal practice and political affairs.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Kirk's political career began in the 1970s when he became involved with the Democratic Party. He served as a special assistant to Senator Edward M. Kennedy and was later appointed as chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1985 to 1989. During his tenure, he focused on party building and electoral strategy.

In 2009, following the death of Senator Kennedy, Kirk was appointed by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to fill Kennedy's Senate seat temporarily.
