Paul Ryan

Paul Ryan (born January 29, 1970) is an American politician who served as the 54th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from October 2015 to January 2019. A member of the Republican Party, he was the U.S. Representative for Wisconsin's 1st congressional district from 1999 to 2019.

Early Life and Education

Paul Davis Ryan was born and raised in Janesville, Wisconsin. He is the youngest of four children of Elizabeth A. "Betty" (née Hutter) and Paul Murray Ryan, a lawyer. Ryan attended Joseph A. Craig High School in Janesville and later graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, with a degree in economics and political science.

Early Career

After graduating from college, Ryan worked as a marketing consultant for a construction company owned by his relatives. He also served as an aide to U.S. Senator Bob Kasten and later as a legislative director for U.S. Representative Sam Brownback. Ryan was also a speechwriter for Jack Kemp during his vice-presidential campaign in 1996.

U.S. House of Representatives

Ryan was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998, representing Wisconsin's 1st congressional district. During his tenure, he became known for his work on budget and economic issues. He served as the chairman of the House Budget Committee from 2011 to 2015 and the House Ways and Means Committee in 2015.

Legislative Achievements

As a congressman, Ryan was a key figure in the development of the Path to Prosperity, a budget plan aimed at reducing federal spending and reforming entitlement programs. He also played a significant role in the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.

Speaker of the House

Ryan was elected as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives on October 29, 2015, following the resignation of John Boehner. As Speaker, Ryan focused on tax reform, healthcare reform, and strengthening national defense. He announced his retirement from Congress in April 2018 and did not seek re-election in the 2018 midterm elections.

Post-Congressional Career

After leaving Congress, Ryan joined the board of directors of Fox Corporation and became a visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame. He has also been involved in various public policy initiatives and think tanks.

Personal Life

Paul Ryan is married to Janna Little, and they have three children. The family resides in Janesville, Wisconsin.
