Payer
Payer is a term used in the healthcare industry to refer to entities (other than the patient) that finance or reimburse the cost of health services. In most cases, this term refers to insurance companies, but it may also refer to other entities, such as government programs or the patient's employer.
Types of Payers[edit | edit source]
There are several types of payers in the healthcare industry:
- Private Payers: These are typically insurance companies that offer health insurance policies to individuals and employers. They are funded through premiums paid by policyholders and their employers.
- Public Payers: These are government programs that provide health coverage. In the United States, the two primary public payers are Medicare, which provides health coverage for individuals aged 65 and older, and Medicaid, which provides health coverage for low-income individuals and families.
- Self-Payers: These are individuals who pay for their own healthcare costs out-of-pocket, either because they do not have health insurance or because their insurance does not cover the services they need.
Role of Payers[edit | edit source]
Payers play a crucial role in the healthcare industry. They are responsible for financing healthcare services, which includes paying for medical procedures, treatments, and medications. Payers also negotiate with healthcare providers on service fees and play a role in determining which services are covered under their insurance policies.
In addition, payers often have a role in managing the care of their members. This can include things like approving or denying coverage for certain procedures, requiring pre-authorization for certain services, and implementing care management programs to help manage chronic conditions.
Challenges for Payers[edit | edit source]
Payers face a number of challenges in the healthcare industry. These include rising healthcare costs, changing government regulations, and the need to improve care quality while reducing costs. Payers also face challenges in managing the health of their members, particularly those with chronic conditions.
