Pediatric Surgeon

A Pediatric Surgeon is a medical doctor who specializes in the surgical care of children. Pediatric surgeons diagnose, treat, and manage children’s surgical needs including surgical oncology, trauma surgery, and transplant surgery.

Training and Education[edit | edit source]

Becoming a pediatric surgeon requires extensive education and training. After obtaining a bachelor's degree, aspiring pediatric surgeons must complete medical school, a surgical residency, and a fellowship in pediatric surgery. The entire process can take up to 13 years.

Role and Responsibilities[edit | edit source]

Pediatric surgeons perform surgeries on children from the newborn stage through late adolescence. They choose the best surgical procedures for treatment based on their extensive knowledge of the unique physiology and anatomy of infants and children. They also provide preoperative, operative, and postoperative care to their patients.
