Peep Show is a British television sitcom that was first broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK between 2003 and 2015. The show was created by Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain, and it stars David Mitchell as Mark Corrigan and Robert Webb as Jeremy "Jez" Usbourne, two mismatched, dysfunctional friends who share a flat in South London. Notably, Peep Show employs a unique point-of-view camera style where the audience sees the events of the show from the perspectives of the main characters, and much of the humor is derived from the internal thoughts of Mark and Jez, which are heard as voice-overs.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The series follows the lives of Mark and Jez, who are distinctly different in terms of personality and life goals. Mark is a socially awkward and overly logical loan manager with a pessimistic view of the world, while Jez is an unemployed musician with a more laid-back and optimistic outlook. Despite their differences, they share a close, albeit dysfunctional, friendship. The show explores their misadventures, often involving their romantic relationships, employment struggles, and social interactions, highlighting the contrast between their attitudes and approaches to life.

Characters[edit | edit source]

Besides Mark and Jez, Peep Show features a range of recurring characters, including:

  • Sophie Chapman (played by Olivia Colman) - Mark's love interest and later, his wife, from whom he eventually gets divorced.
  • Super Hans (played by Matt King) - Jez's friend, a drug-addicted musician known for his eccentric behavior and questionable life choices.
  • Alan Johnson (played by Paterson Joseph) - Mark's charismatic and manipulative boss.
  • Dobby (played by Isy Suttie) - A socially awkward IT worker who becomes a love interest for Mark.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Peep Show has been critically acclaimed, praised for its innovative filming technique, unique writing, and the chemistry between the lead actors. It has won several awards, including the Rose d'Or for Best European Sitcom in 2004. The show has a dedicated fan base and is considered a cult classic in British comedy.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The influence of Peep Show extends beyond its original run, with many considering it one of the greatest British sitcoms of all time. Its unique perspective technique and deep exploration of its characters' psyches have been highlighted as groundbreaking. The show has also been credited with launching the careers of its main cast, particularly David Mitchell and Robert Webb, who have since appeared in various other television and film projects together.
