Penn Brewery[edit | edit source]

Penn Brewery, also known as Pennsylvania Brewing Company, is a historic brewery located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It was established in 1986 and is known for producing traditional German style beers, using authentic German brewing techniques.

History[edit | edit source]

Penn Brewery was founded by Tom Pastorius, a descendant of the first German immigrant to America, Francis Daniel Pastorius. The brewery was initially located in the historic Eberhardt and Ober Brewery buildings, which date back to 1848. In 2003, the brewery was sold to a group of local investors. However, Pastorius reacquired the brewery in 2009 and restored its original name and brands.

Beers[edit | edit source]

Penn Brewery produces a variety of beers, including Penn Pilsner, Penn Dark, Penn Gold, Penn Weizen, and Penn Kaiser Pils. They also produce seasonal beers such as Oktoberfest, St. Nikolaus Bock, and Penn Weizenbock. All of their beers are brewed in accordance with the Reinheitsgebot, the German Beer Purity Law of 1516.

Restaurant[edit | edit source]

In addition to the brewery, Penn Brewery also operates a restaurant on site. The restaurant serves traditional German cuisine, including schnitzel, bratwurst, and sauerkraut, as well as American fare. The restaurant also features a Biergarten, a traditional German beer garden, where patrons can enjoy their beer outdoors.

Awards[edit | edit source]

Penn Brewery has won numerous awards for its beers. These include multiple Great American Beer Festival medals and World Beer Cup awards. In 2008, Penn Pilsner was named one of the "Top 20 Beers in the World" by Men's Journal magazine.
