Pepper Shaker

A pepper shaker is a spice dispenser that is commonly used in many cultures to store and dispense black pepper. Pepper shakers are typically paired with a similar, but differently perforated, salt shaker to form a salt and pepper shaker set.

History[edit | edit source]

The use of pepper shakers became popular in the 19th century as advancements in technology made it possible to grind pepper into a consistent, fine powder. This allowed for the creation of a dispenser with small holes that could evenly distribute the pepper.

Design and Function[edit | edit source]

Pepper shakers are typically small, cylindrical or bulbous containers made from a variety of materials such as glass, ceramic, plastic, or metal. They have a perforated top, which allows the pepper to be sprinkled onto food. The size and number of the perforations can vary, but they are typically designed to dispense a small, controlled amount of pepper.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

In many cultures, the pepper shaker, along with its counterpart the salt shaker, is a common part of the dining table setting. It is often considered a symbol of hospitality and is frequently featured in depictions of food and dining in popular culture.
