Percutaneous pinning
Percutaneous pinning is a medical procedure used to stabilize fractures or dislocations in various parts of the body. This procedure involves the insertion of pins through the skin (percutaneous) into the bone to hold it in place while it heals.
Procedure[edit | edit source]
The procedure is typically performed under anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision in the skin and then inserts a thin, metal pin into the bone. The pin is often guided into place using a special type of X-ray machine called a fluoroscope. Once the pin is in the correct position, it is secured in place. The pin remains in place until the bone has healed, at which point it may be removed in a simple outpatient procedure.

Percutaneous pinning is used to treat a variety of conditions, including:
- Fractures: This procedure can be used to stabilize fractures in many parts of the body, including the hip, wrist, and ankle.
- Dislocations: If a joint becomes dislocated, percutaneous pinning can be used to hold the bones in the correct position while the surrounding tissues heal.

As with any surgical procedure, percutaneous pinning carries some risks. These may include:
- Infection: There is a risk of infection anytime the skin is broken. This risk can be minimized with proper wound care and the use of antibiotics.
- Nerve damage: There is a small risk of nerve damage during the procedure, which could lead to numbness or weakness in the affected area.
- Blood clots: Surgery can increase the risk of blood clots, particularly in the legs. These can be life-threatening if they travel to the lungs.
Recovery[edit | edit source]
Recovery from percutaneous pinning varies depending on the location and severity of the injury. Physical therapy may be needed to restore strength and mobility to the affected area. Pain medication may also be prescribed to manage discomfort during the healing process.
