Personal protective equipment
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) refers to protective clothing, helmets, gloves, face shields, goggles, facemasks, and/or respirators or other equipment designed to protect the wearer from injury or the spread of infection or illness. PPE is commonly used in health care settings such as hospitals, doctor's offices, and clinical labs. When used properly, PPE acts as a barrier between infectious materials such as viral and bacterial contaminants and your skin, mouth, nose, or eyes (mucous membranes). The barrier has the potential to block transmission of contaminants from blood, body fluids, or respiratory secretions. PPE may also protect patients who are at high risk for contracting infections through a surgical procedure or who have a medical condition, such as, an immunodeficiency, from being exposed to substances or potentially infectious material brought in by visitors and healthcare workers.
Types of Personal Protective Equipment[edit | edit source]
PPE can be categorized by the area of the body protected, by the types of hazard, and by the type of garment or accessory. A single item, for example, boots, may provide multiple forms of protection: a steel toe cap and steel insoles for protection of the feet from crushing or puncture injuries, impervious rubber and lining for protection from water and chemicals, high reflectivity and heat resistance for protection from radiant heat, and high electrical resistivity for protection from electric shock.
Eye Protection[edit | edit source]
Eye protection, such as goggles or face shields, is designed to prevent infection of the eyes from blood splatter, respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes, or from touching the eyes with contaminated fingers or objects.
Hand Protection[edit | edit source]
Hand protection involves the use of gloves in the healthcare setting to prevent the contamination of healthcare workers' hands with infectious materials and to reduce the likelihood of transmitting organisms to patients.
Respiratory Protection[edit | edit source]
Respiratory protection includes items such as N95 respirators that protect healthcare workers from breathing in infectious aerosols, such as those produced during coughing, sneezing, or certain medical procedures.
Body Protection[edit | edit source]
Body protection comes in the form of gowns, aprons, coveralls, and full-body suits, all of which are designed to protect the wearer's skin and personal clothing from contamination.
Regulation and Standards[edit | edit source]
In the United States, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sets and enforces standards concerning workplace safety and health, including the use of personal protective equipment. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), also provides guidance on the selection and use of PPE.
Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) provides guidelines on the use of personal protective equipment in healthcare settings, including the proper selection, use, removal, and disposal of PPE.

The use of PPE, while critical for infection control, also comes with challenges. These include physical discomfort, communication difficulties, and the potential for a false sense of security that might lead to reduced adherence to other infection control practices. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the challenges of PPE shortages and the need for sustainable and effective use of PPE.
