Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. It is the fourth-most populous city in Australia, with a population of over 2 million people. Perth is located on the Swan River, and its metropolitan area stretches along the coast of the Indian Ocean.
History[edit | edit source]
The area around Perth has been inhabited by the Noongar people for thousands of years. The first European to visit the area was the Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh in 1697. The city of Perth was founded in 1829 by Captain James Stirling as the Swan River Colony. It was named after Perth, Scotland, in honor of Sir George Murray, a Member of Parliament for Perthshire and Secretary of State for War and the Colonies.

Perth is situated on the Swan Coastal Plain, a narrow strip between the Indian Ocean and the Darling Scarp. The city is built on the banks of the Swan River, named after the black swans that were observed there by early European settlers. The metropolitan area extends from Two Rocks in the north to Singleton in the south, and inland to The Lakes.

Perth's economy is largely driven by the extraction and export of natural resources. The city is a major hub for the mining and petroleum industries, with many companies having their headquarters in the city. The Perth Mint is a significant player in the gold industry, producing coins and bullion.
