Peter Pellegrini (born 6 October 1975) is a Slovak politician who served as the Prime Minister of Slovakia from 2018 to 2020. He is the leader of the political party Voice – Social Democracy.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Pellegrini was born in Banská Bystrica, then part of Czechoslovakia. He graduated from the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica, where he studied economics.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Pellegrini began his political career as a member of the Direction – Social Democracy (SMER-SD) party. He was first elected to the National Council in 2006.

Ministerial roles[edit | edit source]

In 2014, Pellegrini was appointed as the Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport of Slovakia. He served in this role until 2016, when he became the Deputy Prime Minister of Slovakia.

Prime Minister of Slovakia[edit | edit source]

Pellegrini became the Prime Minister of Slovakia on 22 March 2018, following the resignation of Robert Fico. His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by efforts to address corruption and improve public trust in government institutions. He served until 21 March 2020, when he was succeeded by Igor Matovič.

Voice – Social Democracy[edit | edit source]

In 2020, Pellegrini left Direction – Social Democracy and founded a new political party, Voice – Social Democracy (Hlas-SD), positioning it as a centrist alternative in Slovak politics.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Pellegrini is known for his interest in technology and innovation. He is fluent in several languages, including Slovak, English, and German.
