- Petersburg is a city located in the Southeast Alaska region of the United States. It is situated on the northern end of Mitkof Island, where the Wrangell Narrows meets Frederick Sound. The city is named after Peter Buschmann, a Norwegian immigrant who arrived in the late 19th century and established a fishing fleet and cannery. Petersburg is known for its strong Norwegian traditions and thriving fishing industry.
