Petra Thümer 1976

Petra Thümer (born 29 January 1955) is a retired German swimmer who competed for East Germany in the 1970s. She is best known for her performances at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, where she won two gold medals.

Petra Thümer was born in Chemnitz, a city in East Germany. She began swimming at a young age and quickly showed promise in the sport.

Thümer's international debut came at the 1973 World Aquatics Championships in Belgrade, where she won a silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle. She continued to improve and became one of the top swimmers in the world.

At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Thümer won gold medals in both the 400-meter and 800-meter freestyle events. Her performances were instrumental in establishing East Germany as a dominant force in women's swimming during that era.
